Cloud-based endpoint backup protects business users’ laptop and
desktop data by providing offsite data storage that both conserves
resources and protects against loss or breach due to disasters at the
customer site.
Code42 commissioned Tolly to evaluate various aspects of its real-time
data recovery solution and compare the results to the speeds offered by
“Vendor D” - another popular cloud-backup provider. This test included
benchmarking the throughput performance when restoring data. The
multiple rounds of testing evaluated the restore performance of a single
client retrieving different types of data during normal business hours.
The results show that the Code42 solution provided consistently faster
restores of all data types tested.

Optimizing backup operations and reducing back-end storage via deduplication provide benefits that are both immediate and lasting. Symantec’s continuous development and investment in Backup Exec provides increased performance and contributes to improved operational efficiency.
Symantec commissioned Tolly to benchmark Symantec Backup Exec 2014 and compare key performance benchmarks with a predecessor version, Symantec Backup Exec 2010. Testing encompassed initial and incremental backup of Windows physical and virtual servers, as well as specialized application environments of Microsoft Exchange 2010 and Microsoft SQL Server 2012. Testing also evaluated deduplication which is critically important in virtualized environments.
Tests show that the short-term effort of upgrading results in long-term benefits of greater operational efficiency from the perspectives of both time and storage optimization.

In restoring over 50GB of data residing on a Windows 2008 R2 Server system, Tolly found that Carbonite Server Backup delivered the fastest restore time, up to 29.4X faster, compared to the other solutions under test.

CommVault Simpana - Upgrading from Version 7 to Version 8

Symantec Corporation commissioned Tolly to evaluate the data protection performance of Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 & Symantec Veritas NetBackup 6.5.3 and compare them with the CommVault Simpana solution.
Testing commenced using CommVault Simpana 7 which was the "then current" version of the product. While testing was in progress, Version 8 was released. It was decided to upgrade the environment to Simpana 8 to conduct the production testing. (Reports on that testing are also found on tolly.com.)

Net Optics, Inc. commissioned The Tolly Group to evaluate its 10/100/ 1000 iBypass Switch with Heartbeat across different network and device disruption scenarios in a simulated network that paired the bypass switch in-line with an IPS device.
The Tolly Group examined the bypass switch’s in-line protection solution using a leading enterprise IPS device. The goal was to introduce real-world failures to validate the capabilities provided through an integrated solution. Engineers measured the fail-over time of the Net Optics bypass switch in various fail-over scenarios and verified its additional network monitoring capabilities.
Tests were conducted in April 2008.
