The ever-growing Internet of Things (IoT) relies heavily on battery power. Unlike
mobile phones and tablets, IoT devices such as doorbells, smart locks and remote
sensors cannot easily be recharged. Other devices like wearables have very small
battery sizes imposing tighter power constraints. Thus, prolonging battery life by
minimizing power consumption becomes a critical concern in IoT.
Redpine Signals commissioned Tolly to evaluate two of their IoT SoCs, the RS9116
and the RS14100 and compare their power consumption with competing IoT
offerings from Cypress Semiconductor, Qualcomm Technologies and Texas
Instruments. Tests run in an RF chamber included Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy
(BLE) scenarios and benchmarked power consumption in Wi-Fi Standby
Associated Mode, while running a secure TCP stack (with and without co-channel
traffic) and in a multi-protocol scenario using BLE.
The power consumption of the Redpine Signals solutions was dramatically lower
than the competition in every test scenario.

Data center architects require high-capacity, high-performance switches
at the core of the network to provide the best application performance for
users. Dell EMC offers a complete set of data center purpose built Layer 2
and Layer 3 switches that not only provide multi-rate 10/25/40/50/100GbE
interfaces but are also part of the open networking innovation supporting
multiple Network Operating Systems (NOS) options.
Dell EMC commissioned Tolly to benchmark the overall performance, latency
and power consumption of its S4100 Switch Product family, specifically the
S4148T-ON (48x10GBASE-T) and the S4148F-ON (48xSFP+) switches. The Dell
EMC Open Networking (ON) switches provide 880Gbps of backplane
bandwidth and were tested with a full complement of 48 10GbE ports plus
four 100GbE ports with over 800MPPS of packet throughput. The systems
also support 25/40/50GbE ports.
The Dell EMC switches delivered 100% line-rate RFC2544 and 2889 Layer 2
and Layer 3 throughput running various port-pairing configurations of
10GbE and 100GbE at frame sizes of 128-bytes and greater. Tolly engineers
also benchmarked 10GbE and 100GbE Layer 2/Layer 3 latency, power
consumption, port buffering as well as route, ARP and MAC table capacities.

address collision avoidance.
The D-Link Systems switch matched the throughput and latency of the NETGEAR
switch. Furthermore, the D-Link switch offers HA features such as dual-modular
power supply units (PSU) and modular fans.

Video/voice, database, financial and other applications put increasing bandwidth demands on the network. Even with these ever-increasing demands, it is expected that a networks’ latency remains low.
Extreme Networks, Inc. commissioned Tolly to test and verify L2/L3 performance, power consumption, latency and features of their Summit X440 Series switch.
The test results show that a Summit X440 series switch loaded to 100% of capacity will not drop traffic while still maintaining low latency. Thus, the Summit X440 will not compromise overall network performance during periods of high traffic. The Extreme Summit X440 earned 18 Tolly certifications for product functionality in QoS, L3 functionality and other areas, as well as a key differentiator common across all Extreme Networks switches: ID Manager. Power consumption tests proved the Summit X440-48p-10G consumes less than 100W during periods of high network utilization.

Enterprise-class networks are facing increasing demands for higher port- density and throughput driven by rich media applications like voice and video over IP.. Traditionally, network access layer switches delivered the port- density, fault-tolerance and scalability using either a chassis or a stack of fixed-port switches. Stackable switches, when properly architected, can offer network managers a solution that can be scaled as the needs of the network grow over time. In this report, the HP 3800 series switches were compared against Cisco’s Catalyst 3750-X and Juniper’s EX4200 series switches.
The performance of the HP meshed stacking technology used by the HP 3800 Switch Series was compared against the Cisco Catalyst 3750-X with StackWise Plus technology, and Juniper’s EX4200 switches using the Virtual Chassis stacking technology. Test results show the HP switches deliver significantly higher throughput at lower latency in both a standalone and in a four-switch stack configuration. According to HP, its new switches were designed with a large per-port buffer to deal with bursty traffic, allowing them to handle larger microbursts than the Juniper and Cisco switches.

Tolly engineers examined the Nortel Secure Router 4134, a modular switch that Nortel designed to support a range of advanced network services – including IPv4/IPv6 routing, high-performance WAN, high-density Ethernet switching, Power over Ethernet, Voice over IP (VoIP) and security – in a single integrated platform. The Secure Router 4134 is designed to meet the needs of enterprise branch, regional or even headquarters sites.
Tolly engineers compared the performance and power consumption of the Secure Router 4134 against a commonly deployed Cisco ISR 3845, an integrated service router. While engineers measured throughput and power consumption, they also used the hands-on data to calculate initial deployment costs and operational costs over a five-year lifespan to demonstrate how the Nortel switch can provide an effective and cost-efficient option to the Cisco ISR 3845.

Mitel commissioned The Tolly Group to evaluate its Mitel® 3300 IP Communications Platform (ICP) to measure the energy
required to drive critical Unified Communications solutions situated in campus headquarters, regional-office and branch-office locations.
The Tolly Group measured the power consumed (total watts) by a variety of Mitel IP voice switches and IP phones. Engineers then computed the energy
requirements to support three enterprise scenarios — a large-scale network with headquarters, regional office and a branch office; a medium network with 350 users distributed across 20 locations, and a self-contained single-site, small branch office of 65 users. The computations factored in voice switches, phones and the power required to support them.
Testing was conducted in October 2008.

Die Techniker von The Tolly Group ermittelten den Energieverbrauch (in Watt) für den Switch-Betrieb und die Wärmeabgabe durch Switches, die in großen und mittelgroßen Unternehmensnetzwerken sowie in Unternehmen mittlerer Größe und in Unternehmensfilialen eingesetzt werden. ZyXEL commissioned The Tolly Group to evaluate its Modular Switch MS-7206 chassis-based switch with two MM-7201 switch fabric and four MI-7248 line cards running software version 3.75 (ABX 2).
The Tolly Group examined the Layer 2/ Layer 3 throughput and latency of the MS-7206 as supported by RFC 2544 requirements for zero frame or packet loss. Moreover, Tolly Group engineers analyzed and verified the power consumption, in terms of watts consumed, of the MS-7206. Engineers went further by calculating the amount of watts per hour required to drive 1 Gbps of traffic across the MS-7206 switch.
Tests were conducted in April 2008.

Nortel commissioned The Tolly Group to evaluate the Layer 2 switching performance, resiliency and ease of use delivered by the company’s chassis-based Ethernet Routing Switch (ERS) 8300 which is deployed in enterprise wiring closets, or as an aggregation or a core switch. The Nortel ERS 8300 modules tested include Switch Fabric Modules, plus 24- and 48-port GbE interface modules and a 10GbE module.
Engineers measured the performance, resiliency characteristics and power consumption of the ERS 8300 and a comparable Cisco Catalyst 4500 chassis-based switch with the maximum
allowable equivalency in module configuration. Engineers also measured resilient performance between the Nortel ERS 8300 running switch clustering and the Cisco Catalyst 4500 running High Availability (HA) solutions. Tests were conducted in January 2008.

of the comparable core switches from Cisco Systems, Inc. and Foundry Networks, Inc.
Tolly Group engineers measured the total watts consumed by the Black- Diamond 8810 switch, a Cisco Catalyst 6509 and a Foundry BigIron RX- 16. Power consumption measurements were taken across more than a dozen traffic load scenarios, ranging from no load on the switch to a heavily taxed load of eight 10GbE ports and 96 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) ports. Tests were conducted in January 2008.

Nortel commissioned The Tolly Group to evaluate its SMB-class Gigabit Ethernet LAN switch, the BES50GE, and compare it to similar entry-level “converged” offerings from
Cisco Systems, Inc. and HP ProCurve.
The baseline requirement in selecting
switches was that each provide highspeed data transfer with Gigabit Ethernet
(GbE) and be able to power VoIP phones, security cameras and wireless
Access Points (APs) via Power over Ethernet (PoE).
Neither Cisco nor HP offers a switch directly comparable to Nortel which uniquely combines GbE on all ports and PoE on half the ports. Both Cisco and HP offer SMB customers either PoE or GbE — but not both. With PoE a base requirement for convergence, the Fast Ethernet (FE) HP ProCurve 2626-PWR and Cisco Catalyst Express 500-24PC models were chosen. Tests were conducted in January 2008.

Nortel commissioned The Tolly Group to evaluate the company’s
Ethernet Routing Switch (ERS) 4550T-PWR and 4548GT-PWR with
Redundant Power Supply 15 (RPS 15), as well as the ERS 2526T-PWR and ERS
2550T-PWR to determine the price per port
for delivering PoE, switch power consumption
and heat dissipation.
Tolly Group engineers also measured the
cost to deliver full PoE (~15.4W) on all
ports simultaneously for the Nortel ERS
switches tested versus Cisco Catalyst 3560G-
48PS, 3750G-48PS, 3560E-48PD, and
3750E-48PD; and HP ProCurve 2626-PWR
and 2650-PWR switches. Tests did not focus
on the Cisco 2960 Series and HP ProCurve
2800/2900 Series since PoE was not supported
on those devices at test time.
Engineers also verified the PoE power management
tool of Nortel-only products via CLI,
Java Device Manager (JDM) and Web-based
management.
Without any external power supply attached
to the tested devices, engineers measured the
power consumption for a switch at factory
default mode to determine how much the
national average commercial electric cost
over three years of continuous operation.
Based on switch power consumption results,
engineers calculated associated cooling costs
from heat dissipation for all switches tested.
Tests were conducted in October 2007.
