Virtualization and cloud computing environments demand both flexibility and high-performance switching. The Lenovo ThinkSystem NE2552E Flex Switch paired with the ThinkSystem QLogic QL45214 25Gb Ethernet adapter provides both. Slotting into the Lenovo Flex System Enterprise chassis, this switch offers up to 52 ports of 25GbE or 36 ports of 25GbE combined with 4 ports of 100GbE. The QL45214 provides high-performance, 25GbE server connectivity.

Lenovo commissioned Tolly to evaluate the performance and capacity of the NE2552E along with L2/L3 interoperability with the Cisco Systems Nexus 9000 switch. Testing also validated the performance benefits of using 25GbE rather than 10GbE for VMware vMotion virtual machine migration using the QLogic. QL45214 Ethernet adapter.

The Lenovo switches and QL45214 tested delivered wire-speed performance and low latency, demonstrated L2/L3 table capacity and illustrated the performance benefits of 25GbE for virtualized environments. Additionally, the switch demonstrated a range of L2 and L3 interoperability with the Cisco Systems 9000 switch.

Data center architects require flexibility, efficiency and resilience in networks. Virtual Extensible LAN (VXLAN) is an open network virtualization technology that allows Layer 2 networks to be scaled across Layer 3 networks. Defined in IETF RFC 7348, VXLANs can provide the simplicity of Layer 2 networks over high-performance, resilient Layer 3 infrastructure.

Dell EMC commissioned Tolly to benchmark the failure recovery of four of its data center switch offerings configured to function as a VTEP. The switches evaluated were Dell EMC Z9264F-ON, S5232F-ON, S5248F-ON & S5296-ON. Tests involved creating physical network failures to measure the recovery time in several scenarios as well as scaling L2/L3 VNIs and demonstrating robustness.

The Dell EMC switches delivered rapid recovery in all three scenarios tested. Additionally, they scaled to 2,000 L2 VNIs and 256 L3 VNIs demonstrating robustness in response to various failure scenarios.

For cost, security and functionality reasons, a campus network typically includes devices from multiple vendors. Third-party network management softwares are widely used for unified management and monitoring.

Huawei commissioned Tolly to verify its campus network solution’s interoperability with SolarWinds’ network management software. With the test bed topology displayed in Figure 1, Tolly engineers verified that the SolarWinds network management software could manage the Huawei campus switches and WLAN access controllers seamlessly. The SolarWinds software under test included the Orion Platform, the Network Performance Monitor, the Network Configuration Manager, the Network Topology Mapper, the NetFlow Traffic Analyzer, and the Log & Event Manager components.

Tests proved that the Huawei campus network solution is suitable for both single- and multi-vendor campus networks.

Campus network’s access become more complex with the exponential growth of different kinds of mobile devices. When enterprises deploy new network equipment, one key requirement will be new equipment’s interoperability with existing Network Access Control (NAC) solutions for user endpoints’ secure access.

Huawei commissioned Tolly to verify its campus network solution’s interoperability with the Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE), a third-party NAC solution. The Huawei campus network solution includes the WLAN solution which uses the Huawei WLAN access controller as the NAC policy enforcement point for Wi-Fi users, and the Ethernet switch solution which uses the Huawei S series campus switch as the NAC policy enforcement point for wired users. Tests covered user/endpoint authentication (802.1X, MAC and portal), device management authentication (TACACS), authorization, CoA, endpoint profiling, BYOD, posture assessment, and guest lifecycle management. With the Huawei access controller and the Huawei S series campus switches as NAC policy enforcement points, the Huawei campus network solution passed all test cases to interoperate with the Cisco ISE.

Lenovo commissioned Tolly to evaluate six of its ThinkSystem and RackSwitch LAN switches in various scenarios. Tests included performance, IGMP Multicast, routing convergence/failover and Layer1/2/3 interoperability. Interoperability tests included Cisco Systems and Arista Networks switches.

The Lenovo switches tested delivered wire-speed performance and low latency, demonstrated IGMP, convergence and failover results better than or comparable to Cisco and demonstrated L1/L2/L3 interoperability with both Cisco Systems and Arista Networks switches as detailed in the body of the report.

Dell EMC offers a complete set of data center purpose built Layer 2 and Layer 3 switches that not only provide multi-rate 10/25/40/50/100GbE interfaces but are also part of the open networking innovation supporting multiple Network Operating Systems (NOS) options.

Dell EMC commissioned Tolly to benchmark the overall performance, latency and power consumption of its S4100 Switch Product family, specifically the S4148T-ON (48x10GBASE-T) and the S4148F-ON (48xSFP+) switches. The Dell EMC Open Networking (ON) switches provide 880Gbps of backplane bandwidth and were tested with a full complement of 48 10GbE ports plus four 100GbE ports with over 800MPPS of packet throughput. The systems also support 25/40/50GbE ports.

The Dell EMC switches delivered 100% line-rate RFC2544 and 2889 Layer 2 and Layer 3 throughput running various port-pairing configurations of 10GbE and 100GbE at frame sizes of 128-bytes and greater. Tolly engineers also benchmarked 10GbE and 100GbE Layer 2/Layer 3 latency, power consumption, port buffering as well as route, ARP and MAC table capacities.

Small businesses can have big needs when it comes to network throughput. Cisco Systems realizes that and designed its RV340 Dual WAN Gigabit VPN Router to deliver a range of connectivity options and to deliver Gigabit throughput across NAT and IPsec connections.

Cisco Systems commissioned Tolly to evaluate its Cisco RV340 Dual WAN Gigabit VPN Router in both single device and paired router configurations. Tests evaluated the Layer 3 NAT throughput of a single router and the throughput across an IPsec VPN tunnel between a pair of routers. Additionally, tests benchmarked the Layer 4 throughput of the device.

The Cisco RV340 delivered up to 99% of theoretical throughput across Gigabit Ethernet in a NAT configuration, up to 95% across an IPsec VPN tunnel and approximately 975Mbps HTTP download speed in Layer 4 testing.

Pluribus Networks commissioned Tolly to benchmark the performance of its Netvisor software deployed on a Freedom E68-M Leaf Switch to evaluate the fault tolerance and scalability of the OS when connected to a Core/Spine consisting of a Cisco Nexus switch and a Freedom E28Q-L. Testing was conducted in May 2016.

The Pluribus Netvisor-powered Leaf Switch delivered line-rate throughput. In tests of fault tolerance the Netvisor OS-powered switches exhibited rapid failover/failback response times. Additionally, the solution proved scalable with support for large numbers of BGP and OSPF routes, ACLs, analytics entries and so forth.

The D-Link Systems switch matched the throughput and latency of the NETGEAR switch. Furthermore, the D-Link switch offers HA features such as dual-modular power supply units (PSU) and modular fans.

All switches offer 24 ports of Gigabit Ethernet and four ports of 10GbE. Performance tests were conducted at both layer 2 and layer 3 and included ATIS power consumption measurements and TEER analysis.

The D-Link Systems switch matched the L2 throughput of the other switches. In addition, the D-Link has a significantly lower purchase price and consumes much less power than the other switches evaluated.

Tests were conducted using all ports at both layer 2 and layer 3 and included ATIS power consumption measurements.

The D-Link Systems switch matched or exceeded the performance of the Cisco Systems Catalyst across all the performance tests. In addition, the D-Link DGS-3630 has a significantly lower purchase price and consumes much less power than the Cisco Systems Catalyst 3650-24TD-E.

NETSCOUT S-Blade Pro is a low latency blade that works in conjunction with NETSCOUT TestStream Management Software to provide an easy-to-use, multi-function environment for Layer 1 switching. Additionally, S-Blade Pro provides bandwidth-based utilization statistics for all ports.

NETSCOUT commissioned Tolly to evaluate the Layer 1 functionality of the NETSCOUT S-Blade Pro in both 10GbE and 40GbE network topologies evaluating the latency across a full range of RFC 2544 frame sizes as well as with jumbo frames and utilization statistics. The S-Blade Pro delivered ultralow latency at every frame size tested.

Lightfleet Corporation commissioned Tolly to benchmark the multicast end-to-end average latency, skew across receiving stations, and jitter for a given station for its Lightfleet Data Distribution System (DDS). This was compared to the performance of a traditional switch as represented by the Arista Networks 7150 in conjunction with Solarflare 7122 network interface cards (NIC) and related software for the end station. Traditional LAN switch architectures add control plane and network protocol stack overhead that negatively impact performance and consistency. The Lightfleet switch-free solution delivered significantly better multicast performance with near zero skew and jitter compared to the Arista/ Solarflare solution.

Applications requiring near instantaneous packet transfer with fairness across all receivers and effectively no jitter could benefit from the Lightfleet end-to-end solution.

Lightfleet Corporation commissioned Tolly to evaluate the end-to-end latency, throughput and fabric power consumption of its Lightfleet Data Distribution System (DDS). DDS consists of the Lightfleet Data Distribution Module (DDM) which provides the fabric and the Lightfleet host bus adapter (HBA) and related software for the end-station. This was compared to a traditional switch as represented by the Arista 7150 running 10GbE in conjunction with Solarflare 7122 10GbE network interface cards (NIC) and related software for the end-station.

Tests showed that the Lightfleet solution delivered higher throughput, lower latency and lower power consumption than the Arista/Solarflare solution.

The Dell Networking C9010 delivers on these requirements while also simplifying management through a unified network architecture.

Dell Networking commissioned Tolly to benchmark the Dell Networking C9010 Network Director core switch and compare it to the Cisco Systems Catalyst 6807-XL for L2 performance and power consumption. Tests were run to evaluate single-slot throughput, slot-to-slot throughput, and overall chassis throughput.

The Dell Networking C9010 10GbE LAN switch delivered higher performance, higher port density and lower power consumption than the Cisco Catalyst.

The Pluribus Freedom E68-M Leaf Switch delivered line-rate throughput. In tests of fault tolerance the Freedom switches exhibited rapid failover/failback response times. Additionally, the solution proved scalable with support for large numbers of BGP and OSPF routes, ACLs, analytics entries and so forth.
