January 14, 2020 marked the end-of-support (EOS) date for Microsoft
Windows 7. According to Computerworld, over 400 million users were
still running Windows 7 as of January 2020. This once-in-a-lifecyle event is
forcing a migration to Windows 10 for millions of users.
IGEL developed IGEL OS 11 as a software-defined endpoint that provides
simple, secure, high-performance access to virtual desktop infrastructure
(VDI) and cloud workspaces. This Linux-based system runs on any
compatible 64-bit x86 hardware.
IGEL commissioned Tolly to evaluate a Windows 10 migration total cost of
ownership (TCO) model that compared the costs of migration using a
traditional (“fat client”) approach requiring new PC/laptop hardware vs.
leveraging IGEL OS and legacy hardware to provide Windows 10 virtual
desktops for users. Additionally, breadth of IGEL VDI support and client
management were evaluated.
The TCO evaluation demonstrated the dramatic economic benefits of
leveraging existing hardware for use as a virtual desktop client along with
corresponding reductions in support costs with lightweight endpoints
running IGEL OS. (See Figure 1.) Tolly engineers confirmed the fast and
easy conversion of legacy PCs into IGEL virtual desktop clients along with
the depth of management support.

virtualization ecosystems have brought forth new areas where thin
client computing can provide cost effective solutions. Today’s thin
client systems must have sufficient power to handle some levels of
local processing and graphics demands including the latest-generation,
high resolution UHD/4K displays.
HP commissioned Tolly to evaluate the performance and user
experience of the HP t630 Thin Client and compare it to the Dell Wyse
5060 thin client solution. Tests encompassed both Windows and Linux
operating systems.
The HP t630 Thin Client outperformed the comparable Dell Wyse
system in a number of tests that included LAN/WAN visual experience,
file upload/download of both Windows and Linux clients, and
Windows-only 4K resolution playback and PassMark test suite.

These thin client systems need to have sufficient power to handle graphics demands of today’s applications as well as protocol resilience so important in cloud environments.
HP commissioned Tolly to evaluate the performance and user experience of the HP t730 Thin Client and compare it to the Dell Wyse 7020 thin client solution with the Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 operating system. Each is advertised as that vendor’s highest performing Windows client.
The HP t730 Thin Client delivered better performance benchmark scores than
the Dell Wyse solution at a lower cost. The HP thin client also delivered higher
video frame rates and file upload/download speed across a simulated WAN
experiencing 0.5% frame loss. In the LAN environment, the HP thin client also
delivered higher video frame rates and more traffic throughput for better use
experience. Furthermore, without the dedicated graphics card, the HP client
supported four 4K monitors with smooth 4K video playing while the Dell client
could not play the 4K video smoothly with three 4K monitor and one 1080p
monitor.

As deployments become more common, users demand greater variety when selecting thin clients. Companies are offering a variety of products to meet customer needs of desktop replacement/VDI, better manageability and environmentally-friendlier solutions. HP recently announced their new HP t510 thin client (the follow-on product to the HP t55xx series thin clients), a dual-core based product, targeted at the more cost sensitive buyers who do not require quad-head graphics and/or high-security.
HP commissioned Tolly to evaluate the performance and user experience of the
HP dual-core t510 Flexible Thin Client, comparing it to the single-core Z90S7 and
C90E7 offerings from Dell Wyse in tests of 720p HD video playback. These Dell Wyse products were chosen because they were in a similar product class to the HP
t510.
Overall, the HP and Dell Wyse Z90S7 solutions delivered good user performance
while the Dell Wyse C90LE7 fared less well. The HP t510 provides a comparable or better feature set to the Dell Wyse offerings and is priced significantly lower.

As thin client deployments become more common for graphics-intensive applications, the demand for dual-core and multi-display functionality continues to increase. Not only must thin clients offer flexible solutions for local and desktop virtualization requirements, but they must also provide good quality performance for high-resolution multimedia applications and multi-monitor support.
HP commissioned Tolly to evaluate the performance and user experience of the newly-launched HP dual-core t610 Flexible Thin Client, the successor to HP’s popular t5740 Thin Client, comparing it to the Wyse Z90D7 thin client solution.
Overall, the HP and Wyse solutions both delivered good user performance. However, there are some advantages to the HP thin client, specifically related to price/performance.

Not only must thin clients offer flexible solutions for multi-monitor requirements, but they must also provide for good quality performance for high- resolution multimedia applications.
HP commissioned Tolly to evaluate the user experience and feature set of the newly-enhanced HP t5740e in three configurations, comparing those systems to the Wyse Z90S7 and Z90D7 thin client solutions. All systems ran the Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard (WES) 7 SP1 operating system in multi-monitor configurations with playback scenarios of high-definition video in popular formats.
Overall, the HP solutions delivered a user experience comparable to the Wyse solutions. Only the HP solution offers out-of-box support for simultaneous use of 4 monitors. Furthermore, HP supports DisplayPort, VGA and legacy PS2, serial and parallel ports as standard features.

Wyse commissioned Tolly to compare the performance of Wyse Z90D7 thin client against Chip PC EX-PC W7D4791 and HP t5740e running on Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard (WES) 7 operating system, using industry- standard PassMark performance tests as well as playback scenarios of HD video, Adobe Flash and Windows Media Video 9 files.
