Abstract
Tolly Group Report #202116 (August 2002) evaluates Dominion Lasercom DAViD free-space optic (FSO) system in managed and unmanaged modes under simulated weather attenuation from -10 dBm to -30 dBm.
Zero-loss throughput. Both configurations sustained 100% wire-speed Fast Ethernet forwarding with <0.001% packet loss across all frame sizes at every tested attenuation; the unmanaged unit dipped to 99.97% only at -10 dBm due to signal clipping.
Voice quality. PESQ scores averaged 4.24 across all attenuation levels, matching or exceeding wired VoIP reference calls, confirming toll-quality voice through the FSO link.
Protocol compatibility. DAViD transparently forwarded VLAN, QoS and RIP traffic; routing tables on Extreme switches updated correctly after link changes, demonstrating seamless Layer 2 and Layer 3 interoperability with third-party gear.
Conclusion: Dominion DAViD maintains wire-speed, zero-loss data, toll-quality voice and full protocol transparency even under heavy attenuation, making it a reliable drop-in FSO alternative to short-haul fiber runs.
Note: The company later rebranded as SkyFiber.
