Title:
SonicWall NSv 470 Virtual Firewall
Performance on Amazon Web Service Public Cloud Leveraging Keysight CyPerf Test Tool

Abstract:
The massive migration to cloud-based computing has raised the profile of
cloud-based network infrastructure. Security is essential to cloud computing,
and virtual next-generation firewalls (NGFW) are responsible for providing
that security. Firewalls directly impact application performance -- and a
firewall's performance, in turn, depends on the resource characteristics of the
cloud instance where it runs. Thus, it is essential to establish key performance
indicators (KPIs) for firewalls.
Tolly benchmarked the throughput and connection performance of
SonicWall’s NSv 470 virtual firewall in AWS. Tolly engineers used Keysight’s
CyPerf cloud-native testing solution to provide the test infrastructure for
standardized, repeatable performance tests.
Tests were run with both encrypted and unencrypted traffic, as NGFWs
provide multiple layers of traffic screening that are selectable by the network
security team. These tests were run with different NGFW security profiles: basic
firewall, intrusion prevention service (IPS), and threat prevention services.
Threat prevention services consisted of IPS, anti-virus, anti-spyware, and
application control features all enabled. Firewall throughput depends on
traffic profile, encryption settings and security services that are enabled.
