Bay Networks Backbone Concentrator Node Multi-segment FDDI Throughput

Abstract

Bay Networks (formerly Wellfleet Communications) commissioned The Tolly Group to measure the maximum throughput of the Bay Networks Backbone Concentrator Node (BCN) in frames per second (fps) when transparent bridging and routing IP. The Tolly Group used RTBENCH, a throughput application developed by Wandel & Goltermann Technologies, Inc. for the DA-30 analyzer.

The Tolly Group's tests clearly demonstrate that a BNC, equipped with 12 FDDI interfaces, is cable of bridging over 750,000 fps and routing over 500,000 IP fps. Furthermore, the BCN is capable of wire-speed throughput with six streams of traffic, FDDI-toFDDI, when bridging 128-byte frames. The BCN's performance represents the highest aggregate, single-router throughput seen by The Tolly Group for either Transparent Bridging or IP Routing to date.
