Abstract
Samsung Electronics Company Ltd. commissioned The Tolly Group to test the performance of the Samsung SmartEther SS6212 Ethernet/Fast Ethernet layer 2 switch, including throughput and latency, and to quantify the depth of the switch’s MAC address table. The Tolly Group conducted zero-loss steady-state throughput tests utilizing up to 16 Ethernet and Fast Ethernet traffic streams, performed latency tests with one Fast Ethernet traffic stream, and administered a MAC address table depth test on the SmartEther SS6212. Testing was performed in June 1998.
Test results show that the SmartEther SS6212 achieved wire speed with frames larger than 512 bytes, and is capable of forwarding in excess of 2,151,000 frames per second in full-duplex mode. This indicates linear, scalable performance with frames larger than 512 bytes and efficient use of available bandwidth. Additionally, the SmartEther SS6212 exhibits low latency characteristics when forwarding various traffic types, and is capable of storing up to 8,125 addresses in its MAC address table, making the SmartEther SS6212 suitable for use in typical workgroup environments.
