Abstract

SBE, Inc. commissioned The Tolly Group to compare three small office/home office (SoHo) routers: the SBE netXpand SoHo (version1.2.30), the 3Com AccessBuilder 4000 (version 5.1), and the Shiva LANRover/E Plus (version 3.5).

Each router was configured as a remote access server and tested to quantify performance using IPX and IP traffic. The SBE and 3Com devices were also tested to determine their LAN-to-LAN routing performance with IP and IPX traffic across a T1 (1,536 Kbit/s) leased-line link.

Results show that the netXpand SoHo offers throughput that is comparable with industry leaders 3Com and Shiva at less than half the price. The netXpand SoHo is the clear winner in terms of effective throughput per dollar spent on the base hardware.

Figure 1 illustrates that in remote access routing tests, the netXpand SoHo delivered over twice the effective throughput per dollar of the nearest competitor. Figure 2 illustrates that the netXpand SoHo also maintains a commanding price/performance edge over the 3Com AccessBuilder 4000 in LAN-to-LAN routing of IP and IPX traffic.
