Abstract

BMC Software commissioned The Tolly Group to benchmark the effective throughput and CPU resource consumption of real-time data compression implementations offered by BMC Software and Cisco Systems. BMC Software’s PATROL IP/Optimizer (version 1.0) is real-time data compression software for IP (TCP and UDP) that is implemented, transparently to IP applications, on Windows 95, IBM TCP/IP for MVS and HP-UX systems. The Cisco Systems’ STAC compression is a standard component of that vendor’s Internetwork Operating System (IOS) router software. Testing was performed during June and July of 1997.

Test Highlights

  • IP/Optimizer compression delivers effective throughput comparable to or better than Cisco Systems STAC compression.
  • Using IP/Optimizer eliminates potential CPU bottleneck on branch office router by eliminating need for Cisco Systems STAC compression.
  • End-station CPU consumed by IP/Optimizer is negligible.
  • IP/Optimizer effectively handles previously compressed data.
  • IP/Optimizer offers TCP/IP and UDP/IP support for HP-UX, IBM MVS, and Windows 95 systems.
