Abstract

Kevin Tolly opinion column discussing the challenges facing remote access. As of the writing of the column, no straightforward solution existed. One could either bridge LANs to remote locations or use software that allowed a remote computer to appear as a node (remotely) on the local LAN. Neither approach was ideal. At the time, pre-Internet, the bandwidth available for remote access via dial-up was very limited.
